Hey Runner Friend,

Thanks for your interest in the 2017 Scantic Valley 6-Hour & Half Marathon! In an effort to provide you with the best race day experience possible, here are some important details for the day. The more you know, the better you are able to prepare your self. Here’s the scoop…

Important Race Info:
Here is the schedule of events. We want everyone to have fun, be safe, and have plenty of room to run their race, so once a race reaches capacity… its closed. No exceptions.
8:00 A.M.             Ultra-Marathon Start (100 runner max. 6-hour course time limit)
8:00 A.M.             Half Marathon-1st Heat Start (100 runner max. 3:30-hour course time limit)
9:00 A.M.             5k Starts (100 runner max. 1-hour course time limit)
10:15 A.M.            Half Marathon-2nd Heat Start (100 runner max. 3:30-hour course time limit)
11:30 A.M.            Kid’s Pumpkin Patch Scamper Start (50 kid max.)

At 15-minutes prior to each race, we will call those runners to begin to gather in front of the live band. At 15-minutes prior, we will have a pre-race meeting with the runners and race marshals… to make sure everyone is on the same page regarding course etiquette (i.e.: passing, head phones, running 2 or more abreast, etc). After the meeting (which will only take a minute or two), we’ll get everyone moved to their assigned starting area… and we’ll get the race started. Each race will start on time. It is the runner’s responsibility to make the meeting and starting line on time. Please consult the course map for locations of the starting line, course set up and warm up area.

ATTENTION – ALL HALF MARATHON RUNNERS: We are strictly limiting the number of runners on the course at one time. Therefore, if you are scheduled to run in the 8:00 A.M. race, but arrive on race day, thinking you’ll be able to slide into the 10:15 A.M. race… you will not be able to do so, because there will be no room for you.

Pre-Race Warm Up
Other than the parking lot or within 100-feet of the start/finish line, please find a safe spot to complete your warm up. Feel free to run on the course, but stay well out of the way of the runners actively racing… and again… stay more than 100-feet from the start/finish line. Reason being, the timing system is extremely sensitive. If you are not in a race, and get within range of the timing system’s antenna… your data will corrupt the data for the race in progress. Please, please obey the race marshals and only warm up safely and away from the start/finish.

Race Timing & Lap Counting
Please follow these directions! If you don’t put the chip on correctly, the computer may not see you! Each race will be professionally timed, using a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system. When you are issued your bib, there will be one digital tag safety pinned to it. Using the grommet on the chip, you will lace to the chip to the OUTSIDE of your RIGHT shoe. These chips will be working double duty, by tracking your start/finish times… and will be counting your laps automatically. As you complete each lap, we will shout the number of laps that you have completed. Since we will need to communicate with you verbally during the race – we don’t mind you wearing earbuds… but make sure you can hear the marshal’s directions.

Correct Bib Wear & Care
All bibs must be worn on your front, clear to view, preferably above the waist. We need to be able to see your number at all times.

Direction of Running
You will be running in the same direction (counter-clockwise) throughout your race. Each loop is 2-miles long.

The entire course follows a mature, hard-packed dirt road. Unless we see heavy rains immediately before or during the race, the footing will be great. Of course, there may be rocks or roots in places, but this is otherwise an excellent setup.

Advance Pre-Registration Pick Up
There will be no advance bib pickup. Everyone will be given their bibs & chips the morning of their race.

Top-3 Men & Women: In each race will receive special awards.
Finisher Recognition: Each finisher will receive a finisher medal.

A free parking area is located immediately next to the course. If that area fills up… it’s a farm… we have plenty of space for you!

Bags & Bag Check
We don’t want bags being left unattended. Please utilize our free bag check.

The Course
We’ll be running laps around a dirt road course on the farm. Each lap is 2-miles.

Hydration Station
We will have volunteers handing our water & Gatorade to the runners at our hydration stations. There will be two hydration stations. One will be at the loop halfway mark. The second will be at the beginning/end of the 2-mile loop.

Ultra Marathon Hydration Station
Given the duration of this race, the marathon runners will require additional support. There will be a specific station set up just for those runners. Several tables will be on the course. Each ultra runner will have an assigned section on a table, where they will be able to leave their hydration & nutrition supplies.

Ultra-Marathon Support Crew
We will cordon off a section of the spectating area for each Ultra runner’s support crew to monitor the race and set up a small pop-up tent. Ultra runners are allowed to enter to farm with their race nutrition/hydration. All other outside food is prohibited.

General Spectating
Bring your favorite lawn chair!

Please visit the farm stand at the race! Scantic Valley Farm will be selling burgers & dogs made from farm-raised beef! They’ll have lots of other fresh-made food and snacks too. NO OUTSIDE FOOD PLEASE.

The entire Somers High School Cross Country Team will be supporting the race the whole day! They’re a lot of fun and love to cheer our runners on. When you see them, please thank them for taking time away from their studies and competition schedule to help get you through your race.
